Honorable Mention

Janet Jackson at the Great Western Forum Inglewood, CA (April 20)

Despite releasing her debut record in 1982, Janet Jackson underwent her first major world tour as a solo artist eight years later. She couldn’t have picked a more opportune time. The 23-year-old notched the most commercially successful album of that year, Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814, a record that melded new jack swing with shiny pop elements and icy industrial tones. This show, which took place the same day she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, was the first of seven she would perform at the Great Western Forum in 1990. That’s an incredible feat for any artist and an unprecedented accomplishment for a female one. Jackson set out to prove that her brother Michael wasn’t the only one in the family who could blow away a crowd. At a reported cost of $2 million, she put together a show filled with dancers, lights, pyrotechnics and illusory magic. All that spectacle wouldn’t have meant anything if not for the songs, and Jackson delivered a set bursting with hits. Opening with “Control,” she delighted the L.A. crowd with recognizable bangers like “Nasty,” “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” “Escapade” and “Black Cat.” The live show rookie came through, and as Chris Willman wrote in the L.A. Times, “She’s able to provide more pure entertainment value for your dollar than just about any elder on the market.”
